Abstract

This paper aims to clarify the transformation process of the streetscape and total images along the Midosuji Street by tracing the design of road facilities, planning concept and utilization. “Comprehensive plan 21 of Osaka” which was instituted with construction of Kansai international airport. Around 1990, the Midosuji Street was considered as the symbol of internationalization in Osaka and a comparison it to Champs elysees was diffused. In addition, road facilities were renewed by Midosuji-Renaissance-Project at same period. They were designed inheriting initial aesthetic in 1937. The pavement changed from a square concrete tile to a rectangular granite. The sidewalk lighting has been updated in 1984 and remains at present. With rapid urbanization, people demanded utilization of the city center. In this situation, OL plaza which excludes automobiles developed in1974. Moreover, these trends sparked off Midosuji Parade for appeal to the world in 1983.
