Karuna and Social Reform

Abstract

The title"Karuna and Social Reform"is rather provocative as seems to recognise the prevalence of social reform activities motivated by other interests such as for instance political legitimacy and traditional ideological dogmatism. But religious bodies motivated by the honest desire for genuine social reform try to prevent social injustices such as marginalisation of the voiceless, the down-trodden and the poverty-stricken from mainstream developmental processes.Ambedkar, Vinoba Bhave, and Mother Theresa, not to speak of the world-famous Mahatma Gandhi, are a few examples that can be listed as celebrities among tireless social reform workers inspired by the sublime emotion of karuna, compassion.
