Abstract

It is reported that hallux valgus occurs in 40% of elementary school-age children. The reasons for hallux valgus may be attributed to external factors such as footwear, but bone structure has a large impact. In this study, we developed a system to evaluate the foot shape, and studied the feet of 250 elementary school-age children. The system that was developed allowed 360 degree photography of the subject's feet using a smartphone, thus allowing 3 dimensional recreation of the feet, and allowing feature extraction analysis to be performed. It was learned that more than 70% of the subjects had issues which required treatment from a medical standpoint, and out of those, 20% required immediate treatment. It was also suggested that the system employed in this study could quantitatively assess foot pronation. From the above, a possibility to support foot development by extracting issues of the foot using this system was shown.
