Description
In August 1995, four physical therapists and one occupational therapist worked as volunteer with two doctors in Bentre Province in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam. A per capita national income in Vietnam is 200 dollars, while that in Bentre Province is 96 dollars. Although there are 2,507 handicapped children in the province, whose population is 1.31 million, almost 70% of those children do not receive medical treatment because of poverty and a lack of doctors and physical therapists. There are three training schools for physical therapists in Hanoi, Danang and Ho Chi Minh City, respectively. However, since there is no national examination system to become a physical therapist, the number of physical therapists in the country is unknown. About 150 physical therapists around Ho Chi Minh City organize the Ho Chi Minh City Physical Therapy Association, whose activity is focused on postgraduate clinical education.
