Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the process of mothers accepting their own child as hikikomori. Subjects were 15 mothers who participated in a meeting for parents of hikikomori children. Data were collected through the semi-structured interviews and analyzed using the modified version grounded theory approach. As a result, the following category groups were generated: 〔bewilderment to a phenomenon〕,〔confrontation with hikikomori〕,〔change in the viewpoint and relation〕,〔establishment of the child's independence〕 as category groups of smooth route of process of mothers accepting own child as hikikomori; 〔loss of the connection with the support organization〕 was generated as a category groups of irregularity route. Result suggested there is the possibility that the hikikomori is prolonged when 〔loss of the connection with the support organization〕 occurred. Also, in this model of the process of a mother accepting her own child as hikikomori, it was suggested that〔to establish the independence of the child〕 is important.
