Abstract

This paper examines the characteristics of “Wappa-no-kai,” which originated in early 1970s.
The studies of Japanese student movements in the countercultures of those times have gone, but some people and groups continue their movements by changing or keeping the style. This paper focuses on “Wappa-no-kai,” since 1971, as a commune for both the disabled and able-bodied people, aiming at a “new relationship.”
The results reveal that this counterculture characteristic spread from commune to workplace by critically reflecting against meritocracy to unique wage structure. Additionally, present members working in the “Suzuran” workplace express a sense of self-reformation, which is one of the countercultural ideals from the 1960s' social movements. These societal changes clearly indicate how counterculture makes its way into present movements that also promote the idea of self-reformation.
