Description
In general, muscle actions have been analyzed on the basis of electromyographic studies. The results of these studies, however, may mislead the action of part of fibers as if that of all fibers in a muscle. The more complicated the structure of muscle fibers is, the more muscle action is mislead. Deltoid muscle is the multipennate form which is complicated in structure. In this study, dissection of 14 deltoids was carried out to investigate the detailed architecture, so that any additional actions of the muscle can be clarified. Tendinous structures and anatomical attachments of the fascicli were mainly investigated.<br>The intermediate part was multipennate-form and had several tendons within the muscle. Those tendons arose from both origin and insertion. Both reached to the central part of the muscle. According to the number of the tendons, the muscles were classified into 3 types. Type a had 4 tendons at the origin and 5 tendons at the insertion (n=8), type b had 5 at the origin and 6 at the insertion (n=5), type c had 3 at the origin and 4 at the insertion (n=1). All muscles had one more tendons at the insertion than at the origin. Anterior and posterior parts of the deltoid muscle were strap-form and inserted to the tendons at the insertion. The results suggest that the intermediate part may contribute to medial and lateral rotations of the humerus.
