Description

The Noguchi shell midden is a famous Jomon site in northeastern Japan. In this article, we reported the geomorphic environment of the study site and its surrounding area during the early to middle Holocene. We analyzed sedimentary facies, diatom assemblages, and grain size and performed AMS 14C dating on samples recovered by drilling. The sediment was >10-m thick and comprised alternating layers of brown and dark-colored sand. Our results indicated that these layers were deposited in a brackish inlet or a marine water environment formed during the Holocene marine transgression. Furthermore, we reported that the sediment supply was between 8,400 and 7,150 cal BP and that the inlet was buried by an abundant sediment supply from cliffs of a marine terrace or a dissected valley.
