Description

A 79-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with a complaint of melena. Detailed examination suggested sigmoid colon cancer and a metastatic umbilical tumor. Sigmoid colectomy and resection of the umbilical tumor were performed. We initiated systemic chemotherapy after surgery, but she was unable to continue the chemotherapy due to adverse effects.

At 3 months postoperatively, multiple abdominal wall metastases appeared, and she died 7 months after surgery. Umbilical metastasis from malignant tumors is referred to as Sister Mary Josephʼs nodule (SMJN). SMJN is relatively rare and is known to indicate a poor prognosis. We herein describe this patient with multiple abdominal wall metastases after SMJN resection.
