Abstract

The Sanrihama Beach is a sandy beach which is located in the northern part of Fukui Prefecture. The Takasu River is a small river that flows into the center of the beach. In order to understand the relationship among the river-mouth location, shoreline change, and alongshore sediment transport, frequent on-site survey was conducted from 2009 to 2012 on weekly basis. The characteristics of seasonal and/or year-to-year variation in river-mouth location, shoreline position, and littoral transport were examined in detail. The river-mouth was closed often from June to November, while its location moved significantly in winter. In summer, alongshore location of river mouth generally corresponded to the location of local shoreline advance. Both of the change in river mouth location and cumulative longshore sediment transport rapidly increased in winter, but the directions were not necessarily the same. The characteristics of seasonal variation of shoreline change are expressed by the first mode of EOF.
