Abstract

This paper attempts to clarify issues and roles of environmental sociology in the midst of the current times when environmental governance has become a household word. In order to clarify these matters, this paper first discusses the environmental control system theory of Harutoshi Funabashi and living environmentalism of Hiroyuki Torigoe and reexamines their theoretical range in the form of a representative study covering the two major research fields of environmental sociology consisting of “sociology of environmental problem” and “sociology of environmental coexistence”.

The paper then points out the existence of a new research field involving environmental governance that is embedded in the narrow interstice between these two fields while discussing arguments and correlations thereof. This new research field focuses on the following two major issues: (1) the manner in which critical analyses are made of situations in which definitions relating to the environment made by diverse subjects (definition of situation) are intricately intermingled and conflicting while a specific definition is occasionally suppressed as a result of being adeptly excluded and/or concealed or being dependent on and/or governed by a specific definition; and, (2) the manner in which this research field is to be practically applied to actual environmental issues while avoiding these problems.

Thus, the potential of “sociology of environmental governance” is examined by focusing primarily on these two issues while also taking into consideration policy forms.
