Abstract
To reveal favorable landscape of roadside trees from the perspective of pedestrians, the desirable ratio of two elements, branch spread (B) and sidewalk width (W), was discussed. Subjects were presented with pseudo images in which the branch spread was altered in five stages, B/W = 0.2 to 1.0, for Ginkgo biloba, Zelkova serrata, and Cinnamomum camphora. A questionnaire survey was conducted using the semantic differential method. By factor analysis, two factors, "comfortableness" and "sense of openness", were obtained. By partial correlation analysis of overall ratio scores of the pseudo images and scores of two factors, "comfortableness" was found to have a large influence on overall ratio scores. With respect to overall ratio scores, B/Ws of 0.6 to 1.0, 0.6 to 0.8, and 0.4 to 0.6 were determined to be the desirable ratio for G. biloba, Z. serrata and C. camphora, respectively.
