Abstract

The primary goals of foot care are to avoid amputation for high-risk patients, and to help patients achieve a better quality of life and perform activities of daily living. These goals are achieved through the collaborative effort of physicians, nurses, family members, and care staff who aid in maintaining the mobility of the patients. One of the positive effects of foot care is the ability to maintain balancing function. Formation of calluses and thickening of the skin of the sole of the foot impair balance as a result of reduced tactile sensitivity to sense the state of the ground. Regular massage and exfoliation of the sole of the foot, exercises involving the toes and muscles of the foot, and proper use of insoles and fitted shoes may improve tactile sensitivity of the sole of the foot. Diabetes, atherosclerosis, bone and joint diseases, and old age have been found to be associated with the risk of amputation, and nursing interventions focused on foot care were demonstrated to have positive effects for these high-risk patients. This article provides an overview of foot care aimed at maintaining mobility, and discusses its significance.
