説明

Metal island films have been theoretically investigated as multiwavelength and multipolarization optical data storage media. Metal island films are composed of metal nanoclusters of high density. They exhibit anomalous resonance-type absorption in the visible and near-infrared regions. At the resonance wavelength, metal island films not only have large absorption but also high reflectance. Because optical characteristics of metal island films are altered considerably by heating in the wavelength region near the resonance wavelength, the metal island films can be used as heat-mode write-once optical data storage media. In this work, we simulate the optical change of the multilayer consisting of the metal island films with various resonance wavelengths as multiwavelength optical data storage media. In addition, we simulate the multilayers using oblique metal island films composed of prolate metal islands inclined to one side as the multipolarization optical data storage media. It is theoretically shown that the multiwavelength and multipolarization optical data storage media with low cross talk can be realized using the metal island films.
