Abstract

Objective: We evaluated the factors associated with varenicline(champix®) therapeutic efficacy for 230 patients in our smoking cessation clinic.

Subjects and Methods: Subjects were patients at three different hospitals from April 2012 to September 2016. We separated them into two, the success group and the failure group according to the outcome of the 12-week treatment, and evaluated the differences between the two groups.

Results: The success patients were 157 (68.3%), and failure patients were 73 (31.7%). At each 3 hospitals, the success rates were 73.6%, 73.3% and 56.6%. Elderly, high BI, having self-confidence in smoking cessation, and 5time attendance to our clinic were higher rates in the successful group significantly. On the other hand, side effects of varenicline, dose reduction and discontinuation, younger patients, and patients with psychiatric disorders were higher rates in the failure group significantly.

Findings: We performed multivariate analysis about the factors whose differences are recognized significantly. According to the analysis, for successful smoking cessation, the most contribution independently factor is 5time attendance to our clinic, and the most obstructive independently factor is side effects of varenicline.

Conclusion: For successful smoking cessation, it is the most important to promote a routine 5 time attendance to clinic and relieving side effects of varenicline.
