<p>Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator, HIMAC, began cancer treatments in 1994. Many improvements and modifications of the accelerator and the treatment system have been achieved after the inauguration. This paper reviews research and development specific to medical systems, such as expansion of ion species, improved utilization of the accelerators, and a high accuracy treatment system.</p>
