Description

Surgery of the parapharyngeal space tumor is technically difficult because of its anatomical features and the possibility of causing complications. Conventionally, the transcervical approach and the transparotid approach have been performed. In the present case, we performed extirpation by the transoral approach under endoscopic assistance for a parapharyngeal pleomorphic adenoma. A 36-year-old man was found to have a tumor of 6×5×4cm in the left parapharyngeal space which was diagnosed as a pleomorphic adenoma by biopsy. The tumor was removed orally using an endoscope to obtain a better view. Oral intake began the day after surgery without postoperative complications, and he was discharged on the fourth day after surgery. It is considered that transoral removal under endoscopic assistance is an effective and minimally invasive treatment. Further investigations on the indications, effectiveness and safety are necessary.
