Abstract

Computed tomography (CT) colonography might play a role in improving the detailed examination rate of patients with positive fecal occult blood test results. In this study, we conducted a questionnaire survey involving hospital physicians at 226 facilities in Japan to investigate the implementation status of CT colonography for patients with positive fecal occult blood test results. The survey included the following questions: Do you think CT colonography has insurance coverage? Can CT colonography be performed for patients who do not want to undergo colonoscopy? and If CT colonography cannot be performed, what is the reason? The results showed that CT colonography could be implemented in 42% (50/120, 95% confidence interval 33%-51%) of hospitals, whereas it was difficult to implement CT colonography in the majority of hospitals. The reasons for the unfeasibility of CT colonography were shooting images, construction of images, image interpretation, etc. Furthermore, doctors had varied opinions regarding insurance coverage for CT colonography. To increase the use of CT colonography, insurance coverage for patients with a positive fecal occult blood test need to be clarified. We believe that it is necessary to promote the standardization of CT colonography.
