Abstract

The effects of different lid shapes on the grasp patterns and the maximum capacity for opening and closing jars and plastic bottles were investigated in healthy adults. This study was conducted on 40 healthy adults (20 males and 20 females) and considered their dominant hand for measurements. The study assessed the grip, pulp pinch, tip pinch, and lateral pinch strengths. In addition, the maximal opening and closing capacity was measured at each grasp pattern. Results were classified on the basis of sex and revealed that there were medium to high correlations (0.45―0.88) among grip, pulp pinch, tip pinch, and lateral pinch strengths. However, no correlation was found between the male grip and tip pinch strengths or between the male side pinch and tip pinch strengths. In addition, the grasp pattern that achieved maximum opening and closing power was the forearm pronation in case of a jar and forearm neutral grip in case of a plastic bottle. Therefore, it was proven that the difference in cover shape can affect the grasp pattern and maximal opening and closing power.
