The microstructure of ADC 12 die-cast plates, which were heat-treated at various temperature for 7.2 ks (2 h) near the surface and at the center of the plates, were studied by investigating residual stress on the surface by the X-ray based measurement method. The relationship between the microstructure and residual stress after the heat-treatment was then reviewed. Although compressive residual stress remained on the surface in the as-cast plate, the residual stress changed to tensile stress in heat treatments at 453 K, 473 K, and 493 K. The residual stress was released by heat-treatment at 503 K. Heat treatment at 493 K increased the hardness of the α-phase at the plate center. However, the hardness near the surface did not change. The microstructures were different near the surface and at the center of the as-cast die-cast plate. In particular, the concentrations of Cu and Si in the α-phase differed significantly. Precipitates were found in the α phase near the surface, but not in the α phase of the plate center. Evidently there was microstructural inhomogeneity in the thickness direction of the die cast plate. The microstructure of the as-cast die-cast plate was highly inhomogeneous along the plate thickness direction. Therefore, this microstructural inhomogeneity can explain the change in the residual stress from compressive stress to tensile stress due to difference in volume expansion between the plate surface and plate center, resulting from precipitation at different concentrations of the solid solution in the as-cast.
