Description
Lycopene is known to be a natural antioxidant contained in tomatoes or watermelons. In this study, we have studied the protective effect of lycopene on the oxidative damage to patients with type 2 diabetes through monitoring the time-dependent change on the levels of blood sugar and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c). It was found that HbA1c levels decreased from 7.9% to 6.8% after continuous intake of lycopene as long as one year. These results suggest that daily intake of lycopene-rich foods might reduce the risk of diabetes-related complications.
