<p>Efforts are underway to save the lives of crush syndrome patients in collapsed −structure disasters in Japan, especially since the first successful application of Confined Space Medicine (CSM) to treat patients under the rubble in the 2005 Amagasaki train accident. This paper reports an approach to understand the requirements of training facilities for Confined Space Rescue (CSR) and CSM which meet the needs of Japan. Investigations of existing facilities and training curriculums, as well as interviews of rescuers and instructors were conducted to fully understand the CSR/CSM process. Furthermore, the corresponding training facilities were itemized and described with threshold values related to size. Finally, the scope and future direction of Japanese CSR/CSM training facilities are discussed.</p>
