Abstract

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the ineffective factors of minodronic acid hydrate (MINO) therapy for bone mineral density (BMD) in patients with primary osteoporosis.

METHODS: This study enrolled 45 patients (6 men, 39 women) who were diagnosed with primary osteoporosis. BMD was measured at the femoral neck at the start of therapy and after one year using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. The patients were classified into two groups: the BMD improved group (30 patients), where femoral BMD improved after one year, and the BMD non-improved group (15 patients), where femoral BMD did not improve. We evaluated the ineffective factors to compare the age and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase 5b (TRACP-5b) at the start of therapy.

RESULTS: The mean age and mean TRACP-5b of the BMD non-improved group were significantly higher than those of the BMD improved group.

DISCUSSION: The advanced age and high-score of TRACP-5b at the start of the therapy were recognized as ineffective factors of MINO therapy.

CONCLUSION: Age and TRACP-5b could be useful in predicting the effectiveness of MINO therapy in patients with primary osteoporosis.
