Abstract
<p>In this study, a Rapid-Compression Machine was used to simulate combustion in a gas engine. The Rapid Compression Machine was equipped with a pre-chamber with a volume equal to 3.4% of the clearance volume. The pre-chamber and the main chamber are connected through an orifice. The effect of changing the connecting orifice diameter on the methane combustion characteristics was evaluated considering two diameters: 3 and 5 mm. Longer duration of the initial combustion period, larger values for the pressure rise due to combustion and higher values for the combustion efficiency were found for a connecting orifice diameter of 3 mm than for 5 mm. It is believed that reducing the connecting orifice diameter increases the momentum of the flame jet and increases the turbulence in the main chamber.</p>
