Description

This paper discusses the meaning of a sense of guilt in binge eating and self-induced vomiting, based on the narrative of people suffering from eating disorders. Relevant medical discourse has attributed this sense of guilt to the lack of consciousness of being ill and regarded it as a problematic factor that prevents the patient’s recovery from the deviant eating behavior. However, the narrative of the individual diagnosed with bulimia nervosa in this case study suggests that although she is aware that her conducts are because of a medical illness, she lives with a sense of guilt for something. In this paper, I examined this case by applying the concept of crisis that deprives individuals of the ability to act autonomously; she considers her deviant eating behavior as a moral matter by undertaking a sense of guilt and tries to survive the crisis in her life.
