- Correlations between Resilience and Teacher Support for High School Student Mental Health

<p>Background: Period of the high school student is the period when a mental unhealthy state increases. Resilience attracts attention as the factor which has an influence on mental health during such. In addition, as one of the factors to affect resilience, the support by the teacher for the high school student is assumed.</p><p>Objective: This study was designed to contribute to improving high school students’ mental health and it examined correlations between teachers’ support for high school students’ mental health and acquired resilience.</p><p>Methods: An anonymous self-administered questionnaire was administered to high school students (N= 3,638). The questionnaire inquired basic attributes (sex, grade), teachers’ support, acquired resilience, and mental health. Data without missing values were analyzed (n=3,197) and a model expressing the following causal relationships was developed: Teachers’ support would, directly and indirectly, affect students’ mental health, which would be mediated by acquired resilience. The goodness of fit of the model and correlations among variables were examined using structural equation modeling.</p><p>Results: Goodness-of-fit indices of the model were CFI=0.990 and RMSEA=0.041, which reached a statistically acceptable level. Moreover, emotional support, which was included in teachers’ support, had a positive correlation with acquired resilience. Moreover, acquired resilience had a positive correlation to mental health. The contribution ratio to mental health was 41.9%. On the other hand, instrumental support did not have a statistically significant correlation with acquired resilience.</p><p>Conclusion: The above results suggest that emotional support provided by teachers might increase high school students’ acquired resilience, leading to an improvement in their mental health.</p>
