Abstract

A snow-shed is primarily designed against not a rockfall but an avalanche, and yet it is sometimes exposed to a rockfall. In order to strengthen the roof slab of existing snow-sheds against the rockfall, using a shock absorber seems to be effective. However sand cushion which is usually used as a shock absorber for a rock-shed is too heavy for structural members of a snow-shed. Of course enlarging the slab thickness is not also valid due to increasing selfweight considerably. Shock absorbers composed of EPS-blocks, corrugated steel plates and stiffened rectangular steel-pipes were examined under weight-fall tests in this study. It is found that the employed absorber is lightweight and effective for strengthening existing snow-sheds against a rockfall.
