<p>The formula to calculate the ultimate vertical bearing capacity is specified in the guidelines by the Architectural Institute of Japan for the design of building foundation. With wider footing, the ultimate bearing capacity becomes smaller than that obtained by Terzaghi’s formula for sandy grounds caused by the decline of the inertial friction angle or progressive failure. Furthermore, the ultimate bearing capacity of embedded and inclined load have not been clarified. In this study, rigid plastic finite element method is employed to discuss the ultimate bearing capacity of large foundation against inclined and embedded loads.</p>
