Bedrails in Different Color Affect Visual Perception and Seating Motion of Elderly

<p>As part of an investigation of the effect of color in the environment on elderly persons, healthy adult participants were outfitted with elderly simulation suits and vision simulation goggles, and their subjective visibility and motions were measured while they sat down on a bed with bedrails that were pink, green, or white. A visual analog scale was used to measure their subjective visibility, and a motion analysis system was used to measure the bending angles of the neck and hip at the maximum forward-bent posture during the second phase of sitting down. The results showed that the pink rails had higher visibility than the white ones. The participants in beds with pink rails had smaller neck bending angles when sitting down than those in beds with white rails. These findings indicate that pink bedrails have higher visibility and thus facilitate checking of the relative position of the bed head, leading to improved posture. They also suggest that improved posture improves balance and eases the burden on the neck, possibly preventing falls. These findings should help in the development of fall prevention measures for elderly persons.</p>
