Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to clarify the living conditions and nutritional characteristics of people based in Airin district, Osaka.

Methods: A food frequency questionnaire and living conditions survey were administered to outpatients at the Osaka Socio-Medical Center and participants in the public employment system of cleaning work. A total of 255 male participants completed the questionnaires, and 250 questionnaires (123 from welfare recipients and 127 from welfare non-recipients) were used for the study. We investigated whether the participants displayed characteristics shown by the low-income group in the National Health and Nutrition Survey in Japan 2014, following which we compared the characteristics between welfare recipients and non-recipients.

Results: Among all participants, the proportion of smokers and those with less than 20 teeth were very high (58.8% and 79.2% respectively), and their vegetable intakes were very low. There were fewer working people, more obese people, and also higher intakes of vegetables, fruits, mushrooms, and milk, but lower intakes of alcohol recorded in welfare recipients compared to welfare non-recipients.

Conclusions: The participants displayed characteristics of the low-income group, and tended to be more prominent values than those of the low-income group. It was considered that welfare recipients should be educated on the necessity of nutritional intakes based on physical activity, and welfare non-recipients should be educated on the necessity of vegetable intake and reducing alcohol consumption.
