Abstract

In late years, more and more people get on airplanes because of the financial growth of developing countries and the introduction of low-cost carriers (LCCs). There has been a lot of studies for the more efficient air traffic management in order to meet the increasing demand. When aircraft need to adjust arrival time in the airspaces for some reasons such as the over-capacity in the arrival airports and the retention of safety interval, they take a detour (vectoring) or stay within a certain airspace (holding) in order to extend the flight distances. Vectoring and holding cause the arrival delay and the increase in fuel consumption. In this study, we conduct multi-objective optimization of air traffic flow by using NSGA-II and investigate the effect of parameters which have influence on the fuel consumption and arrival delay. Step Back Cellular Automaton (SBCA) is adopted to simulate the air traffic flow. Domestic flights arriving at Haneda airport are considered as the targeting airplanes, with 579 aircraft. The objective functions in this optimization are the minimization of average delay time, average fuel consumption and rate of delayed flights. In this study, the design variables include descent phase position in addition to departure-time offset. The result of optimization shows that there are linear correlation relationships between two objectives of each and trade-off relationships between arrival delay and fuel consumption. It also shows that descending phase has large impacts on delayed time and fuel consumption.
