Abstract

A basic study of flow control by a dielectric barrier discharge plasma actuator (hereinafter DBD-PA) has been carried out for improving the performance of fluid devices. In particular, the effectiveness of plasma actuators at low Reynolds numbers has been shown in past studies. Considering the size and cruising speed, the application of plasma actuators to an unmanned air vehicle seems (hereinafter UAV) to be effective. However, since it is difficult to implement a high voltage power supply system for driving a plasma actuator on a UAV due to the limitation of the airframe size, there are few examples of enhancing the performance of the UAV with the plasma actuator. In this research, a UAV is prepared by purchasing a hobby-use easy-to-get one rather than making it ourselves for quick and easy setup. Because the loading size of such type of UAV is relatively small, a new high voltage power supply, which is smaller and lighter than that used in the previous studies, is introduced and drives DBD-PAs installed at the leading edge on both sides of the main wing. Also, the autonomous flight system is established on the UAV using Pixhawk. In the outdoor flight tests, a stall is deliberately caused by reducing the airspeed while keeping the altitude by using the autonomous flight system. DBD-PA is applied to this test, and the control effect is compared using currently obtained data.
