Abstract

As an alternative to toxic organic solvents, supercritical carbon dioxide (ScCO2) has been used in various chemical industries since it is nontoxic, nonflammable, environmentally friendly, low cost, readily available in large quantities, and it exhibits unique properties relating to supercritical fluid such as adjustable solvent power, enhanced mass transfer characteristics and low surface tension. Unfortunately, ScCO2 is a poor solvent for polar and/or high molecular mass substances. This fact has limited its application to processes such as separation, reaction, and material formation. One approach to overcoming this limitation is to employ a CO2-soluble surfactant able to disperse immiscible solvents like water in ScCO2. This paper introduces how to design CO2-philic surfactants and interfacial and aggregation properties in ScCO2, and their industrial applications.
