Abstract

“... the MAB Programme will address the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through actions in Biosphere Reserves (BRs), carried out in partnership with all sectors of society” (MAB Strategy 2015-25). It is also said that "While World Heritage helps to preserve values, BRs are helping to create them", but these points are common with Geoparks. However, at least in Japan, the presence of BR is weaker. Reasons include a top-down network and lack of a recertification system, insufficient professional supervision, on-site inspections and budget sharing. These challenges may help the future of UNESCO global Geoparks.
