<p>Spray-drying synthesis successfully produced ceramic fine particles of β-Cu1.8Zn0.2V2O7, which exhibits a large negative thermal expansion (NTE) linearly to temperature over a wide temperature range. While the heating at the highest temperature was fixed at 670℃ for 10 min, the heating/cooling rate was adjusted to shorten the total heating time. As a result, the volume frequency median particle size was reduced to 2.2 µm without changing the NTE properties. Compared with the conventional methods, the present method provides the benefit of obtaining fine particles of narrow particle size distribution with a shape close to a sphere. The present results are expected to pave the way to use of the NTE vanadates in thermal expansion control of micrometer-scale region.</p>
