Abstract

The activated sludge method is an excellent sewage treatment method, where air is sent to activated sludge in a reactor to metabolize organic matters by heterotrophic bacteria or nitrify ammonia by autotrophic bacteria. However, it requires a large amount of air to maintain the metabolic activity of microorganisms, and the power consumption of the blower accounts for about 23% of that of sewerage facilities.1) Therefore, for reduction of global warming gas emissions and power cost with the water quality maintained, an energy-saving technology that reduces the amount of air blown to a reaction tank is required. However, the technology has to deal with various problems including fluctuations of inflow load, limited volume of the reactor, and diversity of the configuration of blowers. Optimization of fine control of the air flow is therefore difficult.

This study aims to establish a control technology to send air to each reactor circuit. We developed new air flow control system for reactor using technology to predict and control the opening degree of a valve installed for each circuit.
