Abstract

In northern Kyoto Prefecture, marine terraces are distributed over the coast of the Sea of Japan. Middle terraces are distributed widely around there and their terrace surfaces are well-preserved. Their former shoreline altitudes have been used to examine the crustal movements by geomorphologists. The marine sediments of the middle terraces are overlain by the Daisen Kurayoshi Pumice (DKP), and it is considered the middle terrace deposits were formed in the last interglacial stage.

We examined middle terrace deposits using sedimentary facies analysis and particle size analysis. Successions of their terrace deposits consist of foreshore gavel, shoreface, foreshore, backshore and dune sand and loess in ascending order. Thus we could estimate depositional environments of terrace deposits. In this paper we demonstrate the formation process of marine terrace in a sea level change at the last interglacial age.
