Abstract

Psychiatrists are entitled to submit documents, such as prescriptions and medical information, whereas patients are not. This paper uses conversation analysis to focuses on the asymmetry of the psychiatric outpatient setting. When patients receive physical medical care, biomedical facts may be used to persuade them; however, these resources are often not adequate for convincing psychiatric patients. Thus, doctors often have to resort to persuasive speaking techniques to obtain the consent of patients. This article clarifies the way in which doctors select turn designs when trying to persuade patients gradually and how patients can initiate complaints at improper position when their asymmetry with doctors affects their communication of their needs. These are issues that surpass simple medical critiques, such as physicians not hearing patients’ needs or continuing inappropriate prescription, due to the power arising from asymmetry.
