Abstract

To think about the possibility of quantitative approaches in health and medical sociology, research activates of two health and medical sociologists were reviewed. One was Leonard Syme who has been a pioneer to contribute a new academic field, which was called social epidemiology. The other was Paul Cleary who has been famous as a leading researcher to develop the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems.

There has been a criticism about a naive attitude toward a lack of theory or methodology and putting ourselves in the position of primitive positivism. However it would be useful through research activities to collaborate with researchers in other disciplines and to show evidence to policy maker, although these researches and their evidence would be based on positivism. Health and medical sociology would have a potential to develop the possibility to collaborate with people outside it.
