The purpose of this research is threefold: (1) to clarify the current situation of the spread of foodbank activities amid the growing problem of food loss in recent years; (2) to investigate and analyze problems in foodbank management that have emerged from foodbank activities; and (3) to describe policy recommendations on the basis of the results. We conducted a questionnaire survey of foodbank organizations to confirm their activities in Japan. From direct visits and telephone interviews carried out on the basis of the results, we clarified that such problems as fund disbursement, regional disparity in scale, and conditions of activities were the current situation of foodbanks. At the same time, we confirmed functions corresponding to various foodbank social issues. Based on these data, the future use and challenges of foodbanks as well as policy recommendations were determined.
