Abstract

The bagrid catfish Tachysurus fulvidraco, native to continental East Asia, was first recorded in Japan in 2008, and was legally designated as an invasive alien species in 2016 due to serious concerns about negative impacts on wetland ecosystems, economy, and regional societies. Therefore, we investigated the habitat status and fisheries damage related to this invasive species in Lake Inba. In this study, analysis of body size composition and gonad condition for the fish sampled from May to December in 2018 indicated that the breeding season is from at least May to July. Most of T. fulvidraco captured by the fisherman were the newly recruited 1st year juvenile fish, which were found to contaminate the local fisheries harvest. Based on a questionnaire survey, we revealed that fisherman and persons engaging in fishery processing industries received injuries caused by the T. fulvidraco sharp pectoral spine. In addition, juveniles of T. fulvidraco contaminated fishery processing machinery which increased sorting work.
