Abstract

<p>To compare weathering half-life (Tw) values of radionuclides in leafy vegetables observed just after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident, we carried out literature survey to calculate Tw values from time-dependent radioactivity concentration data in Japanese herbaceous plants observed after the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (ChNPP) accident. The geometric mean Tw value for 131I was 19.1 d and that for 137Cs was 18.4 d for herbaceous plants in Japan after the ChNPP accident; no significant difference was observed between the Tw values of these radionuclides. When Tw values obtained after the FDNPP accident were compared with those obtained after the ChNPP accident in Japan, the values were significantly shorter for both radionuclides; however, Tw values from the FDNPP accident were similar to those from the ChNPP accident obtained in European countries including Russia.</p>
