Abstract

In this paper, we investigated the development process of the tsunami-induced bottom boundary layer under the one-dimensional tsunami propagation from the tsunami source to the shallow water. Two simulation methods for the tsunami shoaling process are ultilized; one is calculated by the Green’s law and the other one is from the results of the shallow water equation model. Based on the analyzed results, it is found that the tsunami-induced bottom boundary layer at the tsunami source area is laminar flow state at first and then gradually becomes the smooth tubuluent and transition flows in the shallow region. As a result, a simple assumption of rough turbulent regime, as commonly assumed in Manning’s formula, might not be valid. It is also found that the tsunami-induced bottom shear stress by the steady friction law, which is frequently used in the numerical calculation of tsunami, has no correlation with estimation in the present method.
