Description

Introduction: In Japan, school scoliosis screening (SSS) was initiated in the 1980's after being enshrined into law in 1978. However, to date, the efficacy of SSS has not been established sufficiently because of a lack of randomized controlled trials, so that a thought of a contribution to SSS is varying in different countries. The purpose of this study was to summarize the global trends of SSS through a comprehensive literature review.

Materials and methods: Literatures regarding SSS published by 2018 were searched. And utilized screening tests and positions on SSS were investigated for countries implemented SSS.

Results: As far as we searched, 23 countries, including Japan have been performed SSS. However, 4 countries (Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, Norway) abolished SSS at the present. The most popular test is the forward bending test followed by measurement of the angle of trunk rotation and Moiré topography. With regard to positions on SSS, there were 16 countries in positive, 4 countries in negative, and 3 countries in controversial positions.

Discussion: In current study, it revealed that SSS was independently adopted and run by their own systems and techniques on the basis of the concepts of each country although the efficacy of SSS is controversial. SSS in Japan is currently at a turning point. Compulsory school musculoskeletal screening (SMS), including an evaluation of spine was initiated in 2016. In the next couple of years, the results of SMS will be analyzed in detail and should be reestablished SSS if necessary while following global trends of SSS.
