Description

[Purpose] To compare the cases of keratoconus with or without progression one year after corneal crosslinking (CXL).

[Subjects and Methods] Subjects were 100 eyes of 74 patients with progressive keratoconus (58 males and 16 females; age range 12-51 years, mean 22.1 years) who had undergone CXL at Satoh Yuya Eye Clinic or Nagoya Eye Clinic and had been followed up for more than 1 year. The subjects with an increase of 1D or more in the mean corneal refractive power at 1 year after operation were classified as the progressive group and the rest as the non-progressive group. Using anterior segment optical coherence tomography (CASIA, CASIA 2; TOMEY), root mean square of corneal elevation (4 mm, RMSE), center surround index of corneal thickness (CSIT), and coefficient of variation of corneal thickness (4 mm, CVT) were analyzed and compared. Mann Whitney testing was performed and a p-value less than 5% was considered to be statistically significant.

[Results] There were 6 (6%) eyes of 6 patients in the progressive group and 94 (94%) eyes of 72 patients in the non-progressive group. No significant differences in RMSE (P = 0.1866), CSIT (P = 0.1651), or CVT (P = 0.1386) were observed between the two groups.

[Conclusion] Although no significant differences in corneal elevation and thickness were seen between the progressive and non-progressive groups after CXL, the cases in the progressive group tended to be more severe.
