Abstract

This study conducted a hierarchical cluster analysis to investigate the commonalities and diversities of the lexical categorization of “cutting and breaking” events in Japanese, Korean, and Chinese. The results of the language production experiment by Japanese, Korean, and Chinese speakers showed that the predictability of the locus of separation and features of the objects are the common lexical categorization features of these languages. On the other hand, there is variation in the number of verb types, the coverage of verbs, and the features that are related to distinguishing the verbs. As to what accounts for these commonalities and diversities, the outcome implies commonalities relevant to the shared aspects of perception and cognition in human beings, while the diversities might be relevant to the writing system, morphological syntactic features, and the categorization of objects in these languages.
