Abstract

It is necessary to understand athletes’ psychological traits varying depending on sports and their positions in order to consider mental support for them. This study conducted a questionnaire on male university rugby and American football players and compared their psychological traits. Factors causing differences of the psychological traits between these athletes were clarified by analysis considering characteristics, competitive environment, and roles of each position of each sport. The rugby players showed a higher score of “mental stability and concentration” among psychological competitive abilities and a higher desire for social approval than the American football players. The rugby players were considered to have an ability of self-control in competition scenes because there were some players with experiences of participation in national tournaments among them. In addition, the results of the questionnaire suggested that acquisition of social approval through success in national tournaments was one of their motivation for commitment to competition.
