Abstract

This study examined the development of the perception of the musical beat by analyzing hand clapping to musical pieces for Japanese children whose age ranged from 3 to 5 years. A pianist played Twelve Variations on “Twinkle, twinkle, little star” by Mozart to each age group. They wore gloves with electrode that could sense each hand claps, and the time stamp of each clap was recorded by a computer. The data were analyzed for the synchrony with a musical beat, the degree of concentration of the claps, and the number of hand claps per beat. As a result, the synchrony with a musical beat increased as the age increased. The degree of synchronization did not change much among children aged 3-4 years and increased among children aged 4-5 years. The dispersion of the number of hand claps per beat in variations was the smallest among 5-year-olds. The 4-year-old children provided the inter-clap interval much shorter than the musical beat. The degree of synchrony for musical beats by the young children increased reflecting the development of the cognition for the rhythmic structure of music. This development proceeds rapidly around the age of 4-5 years.
