Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the actual conditions of handicraft education at the First Course of the Taiwan Governor-General Prefecture Middle School during the Meiji and Taisho eras. The study of related documents has shown that the Taiwan Governor-General Prefecture Middle School built a handicraft classroom and hired a teaching staff for this practical course (handicrafts) as part of an afternoon curriculum, primarily for body and finger training. After 1911 (Meiji 44), the practical course (handicrafts) became a compulsory subject for first to sixth grade students. The syllabus included the following aspects: making objects with flat surfaces, such as bamboo dragonfly toys and table tennis rackets, while learning the structure and use of woodworking tools in the first grade as well as making several types of boxes in the second and third grades. Consequently, woodworking dominated the First Course of the practical course. Although the exact details regarding metalworking remain unknown, it is suggested that facilities in both metalworking and woodworking classrooms were fully utilized as a result of the implementation of handicraft education.
