Description

In the period April 2017 to March 2018, the amount of coal ash generated in Japan was 12.8 million tons. Of this, 0.8% (100,000 tons) was used as concrete admixture, which needs to be further utilized to reduce its environmental impact. However, since coal is buried in various places in the world and its output is abundant, it is very important to know how fly ash is affected when the production area is different, or the operating temperature of a thermal power plant changes. In our investigation, the effects of the type of coal and combustion conditions on the quality of fly ash were examined using a burner-type coal simulation combustor produced by Kobe Steel Ltd., that can burn a small amount of coal (about 50kg). It was found that the combustion temperature of coal has a significant influence on the shape of the fly ash. When the combustion temperature is low, the shape of the fly ash may be distorted. We carried out a test which confirmed whose performance of such fly ash as a concrete admixture. As a result, it was found that the fluidity of the distorted fly ash decreased. We also investigated the effects of the type of coal and the combustion temperature on the mineral composition of the fly ash, the glass phase quantity, particle size distribution, and the physical properties of the mortar. The results will be presented in a poster session.
